Beyond this Point is hosted by Ted Gottfried and Jason Tagg - performing as punk-uke duo Sonic Uke, and as founders of the New York Naked Ukulele Ensemble. The show is guest emceed by Sandy Hook beach personality 'Hazel' and features special guest performances by assorted local Sandy Hookers. There will also be an all-comers hula competition.
Gunnison Beach is part of the Sandy Hook unit of the Gateway National Recreation Area and is accessible by car, or by ferry service from Pier 11 (Seastreak) at 8.15am and 11am, or Pier 16 (Circle Line) at 9:20 am, 11:20 am, and 1:20 pm with return trips mid or late afternoon. The ferries drop passengers off on the bay side of Fort Hancock.
Gunnison Beach is the closest beach to the ferry landing - 5 minutes away by the free shuttle bus service. Alternatively, it is a pleasant 10-15 minute walk to the beach past the old Coast Guard Quarters and the oldest working lighthouse in the country. Signs at the beach warn that "Beyond this point you may encounter nude sunbathers". It is another 5 or 10 minutes walk past the sign to the south end of the beach for Sonic Uke's naked cabaret.
There is snack and beverage service (beer!) on the beach, lifeguards, and Park Ranger patrols.
All are welcome - bring your ukes, kazoos, or just a bare grin.
